In the Strategic Framework and guidelines for the future development of the List of Wetlands of International Importance and numerous COP decisions, Contracting Parties of the Ramsar Convention have committed themselves to develop a strategic approach to designating a coherent and comprehensive national and international network of Ramsar sites.
A number of tools and assessments are developed to support Contracting Parties identifying gaps in Ramsar site coverage and priorities for future designation. Information from the Ramsar Sites Database about the current distribution and characteristics of designated Ramsar sites have been analysed in relation to other information sources concerning the global distribution of different features and important sites of the wetland resource and its biodiversity, in relation to the various Criteria for Ramsar site designation. The results of these gap analyses and assessments will be provided and reported here.
An increasing number of these tools and assessments to support future designations will be added to the RSIS during 2012.
In addition other relevant information sources and datasets such as wetland directories and links to relevant external databases are provided here.
