Wetland directories

In the development of an effective conservation programme for wetlands, one of the first steps is the compilation of an inventory of the most important wetland sites. In the 80’s a series of regional directories were published for Asia, Middle East, Africa, Oceania and the Neotropics, providing a comprehensive review of existing knowledge of the most important wetlands in the region under consideration.

The directories were created through the compilation of information from a wide range of available sources including governmental and non-governmental organisations, expert individuals or institutions, universities, natural history museums and recent literature.

The directories consist of a series of national reports. Each begins with an introduction which summarises the general situation of wetlands within the region, and describes the institutional and legal base for wetland conservation and research. This is followed by a series of accounts of wetlands which are known or thought to be of the greatest importance from the point of view of nature conservation. A site description is included for each wetland which includes basic information on size and location, physical features, ecological features, ownership, degree of protection, land use, flora and fauna, threats, research,  and conservation values.
