Welcome to the Ramsar Sites Information Service

The Ramsar Sites Information Service (RSIS) provides access to information on wetlands designated as internationally important under the Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar, 1971). These wetlands are commonly known as Ramsar Sites.

Are you looking for a specific Ramsar Site or all the sites designated in a given country?

Please visit our searchable Ramsar Sites Database, which also gives access to all official information sheets (RIS) and maps on Ramsar Sites.

Interested in spatial information or an overview of the Ramsar Sites network?

The RSIS provides access to kml layers for Google Earth, and downloadable GIS data of Ramsar Sites boundaries and/or location. It also gives an overview of the current state of the network through dynamic maps and charts.

Do you need a guide to identify and designate Ramsar Sites?

The RSIS offers tools to help countries designate new sites and fill in their RIS. In addition, the Strategic Framework and guidelines for the future development of the List of Wetlands of International Importance, 2012 revision gives a strategic approach to designating a coherent and comprehensive national and international network of Ramsar Sites.

Please consult the 21 Ramsar Convention's Wise Use Handbooks, 4th edition 2010 for guidelines on various matters (e.g. wetland inventories, management of Ramsar Sites, water allocation and management).

The Ramsar Sites Information Service has been developed by Wetlands International since 1990, as a service to the Ramsar Convention under contractual arrangement. Many partners have been involved since inception, mainly as consultees concerning presentation, mapping, data. We welcome the development of more partnerships to add value to Ramsar Site data giving a wider range of analysis and assistance.
